One of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere, Nicaragua has a government sponsored health care program. But with 50% of the population living below the poverty level, this government system simply cannot meet the overwhelming need. Although the poor are entitled to free health care, they are often unable to attain it unless they pay for it through the private sector.

Nicaragua
 is a Central American country located between Honduras and Costa Rica. Its population is 5.2 million people, over half of whom live in abject poverty. Nicaragua was the scene of a devastating civil war in 1978 and subsequent communist governance from 1978 to 1992. The country is still attempting to rebuild itself. The economy, which saw limited recovery in the early 1990s, was hit by Hurricane Mitch in 1998. The needs of the poor, especially for medical care, call Hope Clinic International to its medical missions work there.
